What. A. Great. Book! Written as both a touching memoir to Wylie and a training book, Dale does an amazing job connecting her struggles raising a rambunctious puppy with some of the best “how to’s” and advice around! You can read just the memoir or glean what you need from the training or read the whole thing cover to cover (which I recommend), but anyway you go, you will learn from someone who very obviously loves dogs deeply. I found myself literally laughing out loud and seriously crying (sobbing) at Dale’s story of Wylie, the “best/worst dog ever”. I saw a lot of my own 5 month old Border Collie/Australian Shepherd mix, Rizzo in the story of Wylie and using Dale’s advice, Rizzo and I are successfully transforming our beautiful relationship. Thank you, Dale, for writing such a touching, relatable training book all dedicated to Wylie. Her memory will live forever in the hearts of her new fans!
As a doctor of social welfare and applied anthrozoologist, I have seen a lot of books about dog training. Some are good, some are just bad (cesar) and some are mediocre. I have to say that Raising the Worst Dog Ever is firmly in the GREAT category (and I reserve that category for only the best). Not only is it science-based training advice, but it is a touching memoir. (I wasn't crying, it was allergies. Ok, I was crying. And laughing.) This book is basically like Marley and Me, but where that book stops as a memoir, this book continues with practical advice on how to improve your relationship with your dog. I cannot recommend this book enough. It is on my very short list of books I recommend to clients and colleagues. A must read. Don't miss this one!
